Reflection

"Reflection" is the title I give to a body of work in which I convey emotions in response to place. The timeless quality of the seaside and the country evoke recollections of childhood and places remembered. The style of these images deliberately strives to accentuate feelings of the past, to a life less hurried and more simple. It also makes a striking contrast with my more recent exploration of the 'built environment' in Birmingham.

Southsea —

Vestiges of this once very Victorian holiday resort remain and it is still a place that families return to year on year. New generations of children discover the joys of the beach, the common and watching the seafaring activity on the Solent. For me, it brings back memories of my own childhood and the pleasure of a trip to 'the seaside' whatever the weather.

Norfolk —

A very special place; the place where I was born and spent my early childhood; the place that greatly influenced the way I view the world and now, how I interpret the things I photograph.

Australia —

Mount Magnet in Western Australia is now a small mining town, but was once the centre of a very large mining community. Difficult now to imagine it as it had been in the late Victorian gold-rush, with small tents and shacks springing up everywhere as people flocked in, in search of gold. The skies remain as blue, accentuating the red of the desert but the feeling is now one of relative isolation and decline.
